We stayed at the Swartberg Hotel last night - still too cold to camp (much to my chagrin but Lyn's delight). Great Karoo lamb again.
Today we decide to drive back up Swartberg Pass from Prince Albert and then go all the way into Die Hell. The last 10km of road are breathtaking - apparently constructed by one local whitey with a bulldozer and a "handfull" of local guys in two years. The engineering is amazing and one really needs to spend a full day down in Die Hell to compensate for the heavy and taxing drive. We saw a group of 4 cyclists who had walked into Die Hell from the nonp-vehicular side and wer planning to cycle out the next day via Swartberg Pass - this is easily 10 times more difficult than the ride out of Wupperthal!! (The conversation started as one girl was wearing a Stefanutti Stocks cycling shirt and we found out the group was ffrom Botswana and we had some commone colleagues - small small world).
Todays passes were fairly tame - Kredouw Pass was one. But Meiringspoort is a beautiful ride down the Meirings River through a very high and steep rocky valley, recommended.
Tonight we head for Uniondale and the temptation of camping - or not. Watch this space!!
Made it to Uniondale and a cat called Lily!! |
Will try to post a comment again. I'm enjoying your travels with you.
